Here you will find useful information about what we are intending to learn during the next half term, further information about homework and
pictures of some of our activities.
P.E. will take place on a Monday and Wednesday so please ensure that full P.E. kits are in school on these days. Children should bring a named water bottle, their communication and reading books and a healthy snack every day.
Please remember toys are not allowed in school. This includes any card based games.
This half term our topic title is 'Australian Adventure'. During this half term there will be a focus on geography, history and art.
During this half term there will be a focus on history and geography, as we will be taking a trip to Australia! By the end of our unit of work we will have used our map skills to locate different places in Australia, this includes various tourist attractions and landmarks as well as natural elements. Also, we will have learnt about the history of Australia. We will know where the Great Barrier Reef is, what it is and use our English skills to discover and
present facts about it. We will find out who Albert Namatjira is and create some work based on his. Finally, we will compare Australian sport to the UK.
Throughout this half term in Year 5, the children will have the opportunity to discover all about different animals including humans and how we grow and develop. This will include learning how all animals develop from babies to adults, in particular exploring animals which originate in Australia.
In English during this half term we will be focusing on stories from other cultures. We will rewrite our own versions, explore play scripts, write from another characters point of view, write a review and write a report using non-fiction sources.
Alongside their home reading, the children will be developing their comprehension skills through guided reading and class discussion about a variety of novels and text types. They will be learning to use inference and deduction to answer questions about the text as well as finding evidence to support their ideas. This half term our class text focus will continue to be ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’ by Maz Evans.
This half term our focus will be on measure and will be broken down as follows:
• Complete our work on angles
• Convert between metric measure
• Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric measure and
• Estimate volume and capacity
Across all of these areas of Maths, children will be required to apply their skills to problem solving and reasoning.
For more information please see the curriculum letter at the bottom of the page.
A different homework activity can be selected by the children every two weeks. Spellings will be sent home on a Friday each week and will be tested the following Friday. Every two weeks the children will be set a problem-solving Maths activity as homework. The expectation is to have a go! Bring in any notes or working out that you do and we will discuss it altogether at school. Homework should be handed in on the dates shown on the homework overview (see bottom of page).
If possible try to read with your child every day and record this in your child's communication book. Also times tables should be being practised at home. Children in Year 5 are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12.
