Here you will find useful information about what we are intending to learn during the next half term, further information about homework and
pictures of some of our activities.
P.E. will take place on a Tuesday so please ensure that full P.E. kits are in school on this day. This half term we will be swimming on a Wednesday so swimming kits need to be brought in to school. Children should bring a named water bottle every day.
Raiders and Invaders!
This half term our topic title is 'Raiders and Invaders'. During this half term there will be a focus on history, the children will be taking a trip back to Anglo-Saxon times.
We will be exploring why, when, where and how the Anglo-Saxons first invaded Britain, discussing place names and their meanings and how the Anglo-Saxon’s influenced this. Then we will be exploring Anglo-Saxon village life and the jobs they had to do, even the children! We will spend some time looking at artefacts and seeing what they can teach us about Anglo-Saxon life. During our trip this half term we will have chance to explore some real life Anglo-Saxon artefacts too! Finally, we will think about Anglo-Saxon religion, beliefs and faith.
In English during this half term we will be focusing on ‘Beowulf: Dragonslayer’ by Rosemary Sutcliffe and ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo.
We will spend the first week discussing and writing our own balanced arguments. Following this we will be writing a persuasive letter, diary entry and non-chronological report. After lots of time of spent exploring the story we will then spend the final two weeks writing our own versions.
In Maths, we will begin the half term by exploring multiplication and
division. We will be exploring factors, multiples and prime numbers, square and cube numbers and learn more about formal methods for
multiplication and division. Following this we will be looking at statistics including line graphs, tables and time tables and finishing the half term by beginning to explore area and perimeter.
For more information please see the curriculum letter at the bottom of the page.
A different homework activity can be selected by the children every two weeks. Spellings will be sent home on a Friday each week and will be tested the following Friday. Homework should be handed in on the dates shown on the homework overview (see bottom of page). There are two Maths homework activities on Education City which the children must complete by the end of half term.
If possible try to read with your child every day and record this in your child's communication book. Also times tables should be being practised at home. Children in Year 5 are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12.
