Please remember toys are not allowed in school. This includes any card based games.

This half term our topic title is 'Eureka!'. During this half term there will be a focus on history and science. We will be travelling back to the Ancient Greek times and learning what life was like and about some famous inventors and scientists of the time.

During this half term there will be a focus on history, we will be going back and travelling to Greece to learn all about the Ancient Greek times. By the end of our unit of work we will be able to explain how and why the Greek empire grew while working through a timeline of chronology. We will have discussed and explored the political system of Ancient Greece and compared this to our political system. From exploring a range of sources, including art, we will gather evidence to support what historians now know about Ancient Greece including being able to discuss the different city states and facts about the Battle of Marathon. Finally, we will use facts about Gods and Goddesses to create our own Greek myth.

Throughout this half term in Year 5, the children will have the opportunity to learn all about scientists and inventors, in particular focusing on Greek people. We will be exploring Archimedes’ inventions, discussing how CSI technology works – including having a go ourselves to solve a crime! We will also explore the history behind Stonehenge and its links with Science and learning about many more exciting discoveries!

In English during this half term we will be focusing on the story of ‘Percy Jackson and the
Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan. We will also explore Greek myths and legends alongside the story. We will be writing letters to persuade, character descriptions and writing our own versions of stories. Alongside their home reading, the children will be developing their comprehension skills through guided reading and class discussion about a variety of novels and text types. They will be learning to use inference and deduction to answer questions about the text as well as finding evidence to support their ideas. This half term our class text focus will be ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’ by Maz Evans.

This half term our focus in Maths will be on fractions, decimals and percentages and will be broken down as follows.
• Adding and subtracting fractions, including mixed numbers
• Subtracting fractions, including mixed numbers

• Finding fractions of amounts
• Decimals
• Decimals as fractions

Across all of these areas of Maths, children will be required to apply their skills to problem solving and reasoning.

A different homework activity can be selected by the children every two weeks. Spellings will be sent home on a Friday each week and will be tested the following Friday. Every two weeks the children will be set a problem-solving Maths activity as homework. The expectation is to have a go! Bring in any notes or working out that you do and we will discuss it altogether at school. Homework should be handed in on the dates shown on the homework overview (see bottom of page).

If possible try to read with your child every day and record this in your child's communication book. Also times tables should be being practised at home. Children in Year 5 are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12.
