Please remember toys are not allowed in school. This includes any card based games.

 It's a Kind of Magic!

This half term our topic title is 'It's a Kind of Magic!'. During this half term there will be a focus on science and geography.

During this half term there will be a focus on geography, we will be exploring maps.
By the end of our unit of work we will understand how to use a compass, what the points on a compass are and the direction of them. We will have explored maps and created our own. We will understand how to read one and what the different symbols mean and represent.

Throughout this half term in Year 5, the children will have the opportunity to learn all about materials including their properties and changes.
We will carry out various experiments to see materials changing. Discuss reversible and irreversible changes and take part in many more activities exploring materials.

In English during this half term we will be focusing on the story of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. We will be writing poetry, exploring language, writing a diary entry involving a character description and creating a wanted poster.

Alongside their home reading, the children will be developing their comprehension skills through guided reading and class discussion about a variety of novels and text types. They will be learning to use inference and deduction to answer questions about the text as well as finding evidence to support their ideas. This half term our class text focus will continue to be ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’ by Maz Evans.

This half term our focus will be on fractions, decimals and percentages and will be broken down as
• Worded problems
• Geometry – properties of shapes
• Geometry – position and direction
Across all of these areas of Maths, children will be required to apply their skills to problem solving and reasoning.

For more information please see the curriculum letter at the bottom of the page.

A different homework activity can be selected by the children every two weeks. Spellings will be sent home on a Friday each week and will be tested the following Friday. Every two weeks the children will be set a problem-solving Maths activity as homework. The expectation is to have a go! Bring in any notes or working out that you do and we will discuss it altogether at school. Homework should be handed in on the dates shown on the homework overview (see bottom of page).

If possible try to read with your child every day and record this in your child's communication book. Also times tables should be being practised at home. Children in Year 5 are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12.
