Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Class teacher: Miss Condon

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Barnes

Thank you for visiting our Class page. We hope you find lots of information about the exciting things happening in our classroom. On this page you will also be able to find the latest class newsletter, useful website links and homework help, photographs and much more.

Topic

This half term our topic is based around the theme of an ‘Enchanted Woodland’, which we know will encourage and develop the children’s imagination! Through this topic we will be exploring woodlands within our country and the animals that live within them as well as exploring the mystical world of fairies and gnomes.

Within Geography we will be investigating features of woodland and developing our map skills to both read and create a map using a key.   We will also be working on using directional language and map skills to navigate ourselves around Mickleton as well as beginning to explore the use of a compass to support us! The children will also be encouraged to explore environmental issues, exploring how we can help protect our woodlands.

English

This half term we will be exploring a wide range of text types. For our narrative writing we will be exploring traditional tales with:

  • Jack and the Beanstalk
  • Hansel and Gretel by Anthony Brown
  • Little Red Riding Hood Story

We will also be looking at the alternative stories which tell the story from a different perspective.

  • Trust Me, Jack's Beanstalk Stinks!: The Story of Jack and the Beanstalk as Told by the Giant (The Other Side of the Story) by Nancy Loewen.
  • Trust Me, Hansel and Gretel Are Sweet!: The Story of Hansel and Gretel as Told by the Witch (Other Side of the Story) by Nancy Loewen.
  • Honestly, Red Riding Hood was Rotten!: The Story of Little Red Riding Hood as Told by the Wolf by Trisha Speed Shaskan, illustrated by Gerald Guerlais.

Through these texts we will encourage the children to learn them through story mapping and then innovate these texts to create their own traditional tale.

Maths

In Maths, the children will develop their understanding of measurement. Looking at ordering objects by length and height, saying which object is heavier or lighter and exploring capacity. We will also be looking at solving one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by using objects, pictorial representations and arrays.

They will also be developing throughout each area their problem solving skills.

Reading Books

On Monday children will bring home their reading book. They will change this book every Monday as long as they bring back the previous book. Their stage reading book matches their comprehension level so if they are reading the words easily, ask them questions about the story throughout to help improve their understanding. As the children bring home one book a week please read other books, magazines, etc with your child at home to extend.

P.E.

This term our PE sessions will be on a Thursday and a Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school and that it is labelled.

Homework

This year children will be given a Topic Homework Task sheet consisting of 8-10 homework activities. It is up to the children which of these homework challenges they complete and they are to be handed in fortnightly on the following dates:

Wednesday 28th February

Wednesday 14th March

Wednesday 28th March

On a week where the Topic Homework Task is not due, children will be given a Maths based from Education City to complete.

Spellings will be given out on Fridays and will be tested the following Friday.

Questions or Queries

If you would like to speak to me about your child please come and see me in the playground before school. Either myself or Mrs Barnes (unless in meetings) will be on the playground at 8.45, where possible please do not come in to the classroom before 8.45 as we are busy setting up for the day. You can also leave a note in your child’s homework diary (which when possible is checked on a Monday and Thursday) or leave a note with your child. If you require a meeting about your child please make an appointment with myself and I will be able to arrange an appropriate time.
