Moon Zoom

To begin our space learning, we will be learning about the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong and exploring the impact he has had on history. We will also be making comparisons between him and Tim Peake.

This half term we will be reading The Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram.

Through this text we will be:

Writing descriptions of Bob’s, his room, and the moon

Writing an application to go into space.

Writing fact files about Neil Armstrong

Writing space poems

Designing a Spaceship/Safety Commands/Role-play the Countdown

Making rocket adverts

Writing alien descriptions

Discussion Bob’s day sequence/Postcards/Comics

Grammar and Punctuation

Using plural ending (s es) verbs with no change (ing  ed  er) prefixes (un) how it changes the meaning of verbs and adjectives. E.g. unkind or untie.

Using finger spaces, capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks.

In Maths, the children will develop their understanding of Fractions and positional language. The children will be recognising, finding and naming a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. As well as a quarter as 1 of 4 equal parts of an object, shape or quantity.

They will also be describing position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns.

Reading Books

On Monday children will bring home their reading book. They will change this book every Monday as long as they bring back the previous book. Their stage reading book matches their comprehension level so if they are reading the words easily, ask them questions about the story throughout to help improve their understanding. As the children bring home one book a week please read other books, magazines, etc with your child at home to extend.

This term our PE sessions will be on a Thursday and a Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school and that it is labelled.

This year children will be given a Topic Homework Task sheet consisting of 8-10 homework activities. It is up to the children which of these homework challenges they complete and they are to be handed in fortnightly on the following dates:

Wednesday 2nd May

Wednesday 16th May

Wednesday 23rd May

Spellings will be given out on Fridays and will be tested the following Friday.

Questions or Queries

If you would like to speak to me about your child please come and see me in the playground before school. Either myself or Mrs Barnes (unless in meetings) will be on the playground at 8.45, where possible please do not come in to the classroom before 8.45 as we are busy setting up for the day. You can also leave a note in your child’s homework diary (which when possible is checked on a Monday and Thursday) or leave a note with your child. If you require a meeting about your child please make an appointment with myself and I will be able to arrange an appropriate time.
