Reading in Year 5

At Mickleton Primary School, we believe that language is fundamental to the overall development of the child and enables their access to the curriculum in all its aspects. We encourage reading for meaning, fluency, accuracy and pleasure,  to increase independence and confidence.

In Year Five, we have daily reading lessons to help all children become fluent and confident readers,  both decoding and understanding a full range of texts.

On Mondays and Tuesdays we have reading fluency lessons to improve oracy, which are centred around reading and speaking with prosody using the 6 Ps:

  • Power
  • Pitch
  • Pace
  • Punctuation
  • Passion
  • Pause

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, we use Reading VIPERS to help children comprehend a text.
