World Book Day 2016 saw the school take a different focus for the day. Following our recent parent and pupil reading surveys we acted on the feedback received to introduce some new initiatives.
Poetry Recital Competition
Parents were keen to see more focus on poetry recitals and learning poetry from heart across the school , this also linked to the review of the English Objectives already achieved in each year group. A poetry recital competition was launched and all children from Years 1 to 6 wrote out and learnt a poem off by heart as their homework . On World Book Day all of the children performed their poem and showed their work to the rest of the class.
The winners from each year group then performed their poem at the Parents Celebration Assembly on Friday 4th March 2016. Prizes were awarded (thanks to FOS) to these children . EYFS children from Nursery and Reception performed a collective Nursery Rhyme that they had learnt in class and the winners of their bookmark competition were announced.
Following interest from many parents and the difficulties many families face in accessing the local library service the school decided to set up a book swap for World Book Day. This was a great success and every child in the whole school from Nursery to Y6 was able to take home a new book. Time was spent by each class browsing the amazing range and selection of books in the hall; many books were also already eagerly started before the children had to return to their lessons. Thanks to the generosity of some parents and staff we were also able to restock all of the classroom book shelves with the excess books.
Many thanks to all of the parents, staff and children
